Sarah Cowan White
Athens, Georgia

My work aims to tell stories of comfort and discomfort in familiar, yet non-specific interior spaces. Creating these vignettes allows me to examine themes of daily habits, rituals, intimacy, and one's relationship with their environment. I enjoy weaving personal and universal narratives of nostalgia into my work. The balance between stasis and transition is also a common theme of exploration for me.

I love hearing the narratives that my viewers carry with them when seeing my work. Statements like, "The house I lived in while in college looked just like that!" or "This sofa reminds me of my grandmother's" are truly meaningful to me. The ways in which we attach memory to places and objects are my current fascination, and are helping me to process my own memories and experiences.

Most days you can find me teaching art to high schoolers, having kitchen dance parties with my husband, and drinking coffee while making half a dozen to-do lists.
